Long ago a great stone cross was erected outside the judge's lodgings in the town square. Everyone said aloud it was to symbolise justice; no one dared voice its true purpose. But even though it was blessed by a priest and stood for centuries, many people still disappeared without a trace. Sometimes, long after dark, a stranger was glimpsed stalking through the shadows, but those who saw him merely crossed themselves when questioned, and all refused to describe what they saw.
